Tracking the Roses

Roisin Hunt - San Francisco Rose 2010

There's more to the Festival than the last week in August in Tralee. A lot more. The Westmeath Independent brings us up to date with events all over the Midlands.

There are two reasons for the Midlands to celebrate the Roses - they have two Knockcroghery Roses - Aine Shine, Liverpool Rose and Roisin Hunt, San Francisco Rose.

Briefly, the itinerary takes the Roses from Ballina through Birr, Banagher, Dublin Clare and Limerick. To read the full itinerary please read the Westmeath Independent.

San Francisco Rose from Curry

The Westmeath Independent informs us that Roisin Hunt is the 2010 San Francisco Rose. Roisin hails from Curry, Knockcroghery in Westmeath and is a Media Studies Graduate. She has been working in California for over a year.
And is Roisin's dad happy? The Independent quotes him, "It's gathering steam alright, come August we'll be hyper".

Full story at the Westmeath Independent. Picture from the United Irish Cultural Center website.

OOPS!! As you can see from the comments below, Knockcroghery is in Roscommon, not Westmeath.

From San Francisco to LA

We have been sent an item about Jamie Lundy, 2008 San Franciso Rose. In 2006 Jamie wrote about an Immersion Trip she undertook, with others, to East Los Angeles. It would be an understatement to call that area deprived and dangerous, but then I have never been there. Jamie has, and her writing about that experience is wonderful. If you go to the Genesis magazine here, then go to page 21, you can read the entire story. It is worth the effort.
p.s. find Jamie in the pic!

Jamie from San Francisco

If you follow the comments bar, you will see that our American friends are not shy about supporting their Roses. Maybe we are too shy and self-effacing. Yeah, right.

This picture of Jamie Lundy, San Francisco Rose 2008, is care of San Francisco Fan bebo site. You will find very good pictures taken at their selection night.

San Francisco's Jamie

We received a comment praising Jamie Lundy, the San Francisco Rose 2008. As we have no picture of Jamie, we went in search. The picture can be found on the newsletter of the United Irish Cultural Center. They give photographs of all the prospective roses for San Francisco.
Further details are at their website.

Breaking News - San Francisco

We believe (though it must be confirmed) that Jamie Lundy is the 2008 San Francisco Rose. This is a quote from Gator Buzz 'Congratulations to anthropology undergrad Jamie Lundy, who will represent San Francisco in Ireland’s Rose of Tralee Festival in August. Every year, 30 young women from major ports of Irish immigration are selected to represent their respective communities. One winner is picked out of these finalists, and is crowned the “Rose of Tralee.” Lundy tells me this “is not a beauty pageant, and is based on personality and speaking ability, as the overall winner will serve as a kind of Irish ambassador to the world. The Rose of Tralee is the largest and oldest event Ireland holds each year, steeped in tradition and culture…I am so proud to represent San Francisco’s community of Irish immigrants and hope to make San Francisco proud this August.” '
